Journalists have started to publish stories about the Pandora Papers—a collection of nearly 3 terabytes of data documenting how wealthy politicians across the world have used offshore havens to avoid taxes and keep their assets a secret from the public.
The Pandora Papers shed light on the inner workings of the offshore economy. As more stories are published, the political leaders and other elite featured in the leak will likely face significant implications.
The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) led the 2-year investigation of the nearly 12 million leaked files in collaboration with 600 journalists in 117 countries.
This leak feels similar to the Panama Papers of 2016 (for an overview of the Panama Papers and offshore tax havens, check out The Panama Papers documentary).
According to the New York Times, the main difference between the Panama and Pandora Papers is that the Pandora Papers establish links of offshore activity to more than twice as many politicians and public officials.” 35 of these public officials are current or former leaders of their country.
Government officials across the world who were named in the leak are already beginning to face intense scrutiny and criticism from the public.
You’ll want to be following this story over the next weeks and months. Only time will tell the full consequences of the Pandora Papers.
