Police suspect explosion in Sweden was intentional
At least 20 people were taken to the hospital following an explosion at an apartment complex in Gothenburg
Up to 20 people were seriously injured following an explosion at an apartment complex in Gothenburg, Sweden on Tuesday, September 28. Police do not yet know what caused the explosion but believe it was intentional.
Authorities believe that the explosion might be related to organized crime, which has become a quickly growing concern for Swedish authorities in recent years.
Sweden’s rate of gun violence has been described by some researchers as a “social contagion.” The country has gone from having one of the lowest rates of gun violence in Europe to one of the highest over the past decade.
Some political factions have attributed increasing crime rates to immigration from the Middle East and North Africa, while others have blamed organized crime and the drug trade.
To combat increasing crime, the Swedish Policy Authority added over 5,000 employees between 2016 and 2020. This is part of the country’s plan to add 10,000 new employees between 2016 and 2024.
